Squalane

Squalane is the quiet echo. It mirrors a softness the skin already knows, the way a familiar voice feels like home. In the Apothecary, it represents belonging, ease, and care that does not need to announce itself.

Squalane is a lightweight oil derived from squalene, a natural compound that our own skin produces as part of its protective oils. Squalene itself is fragile and spoils easily, so it is gently stabilized to create squalane, which stays fresh for a long time. Our squalane is plant-derived, most commonly from olives or sugarcane, rather than from shark liver, which was the traditional source.

Squalane is a lightweight, plant-derived oil known for its silky, weightless feel. It absorbs easily, helping oils and balms spread smoothly and leaving skin feeling soft and supple, never greasy. Because it so closely resembles the oils skin already makes, it tends to feel familiar and comfortable, sinking in almost as soon as it is applied.

It is colorless and nearly odorless, so it does not change the look or scent of a formula. That makes it a favorite for blending: a little squalane can make a rich balm feel lighter, help a thick oil spread more easily, or give a body butter a smoother finish.

In hair care, squalane helps add softness and shine without heaviness, and it can help smooth frizz. In face and body oils, it gives a silky glide and a soft, velvety after-feel.
